Introduction - Case Inlet
Cruise
Springtime is here, so it must be time for the NW Potters
to head out to Zittles and do some more South Sound
Exploring. This time, we will be transiting the length
of the Case Inlet, arguably the most beautiful inlet
in the South Sound.
Our cruise will begin on the waters surrounding Johnson
Point, the location of Zittles fine protected marina.
Early arrivals can launch and daysail in the area, perhaps
visiting Joemma Beach on the Case Inlet, or heading
past Devils Head and investigating the waters of the
Drayton Passage. Moorage at Zittels is again provided
at a reduced cost of around $10/boat.
Saturday morning launchers should be in the water by
9:00am to join with the fleet, but latecomers are always
welcome and can meet up on the water. After a brief
review of our float plan, the potter pod will venture
north into the waters of the Case Inlet. Leaving both
Joemma Beach and Heron Island to starboard, we will
ply the wide open waters on an all day flood that should
help push us into the inlet. A lunch break at McMicken
Island can provide a nice break for those who want to
stretch their legs. This small Island is attached to
Hartstene Island by a "tomblo", a spit of
sand that covers at high tides. It is a pleasant walk
around the beach at low tide, and is also known for
it's clamming.
Passing the entrance to the Pickering Passage, we will
continue past Reach and Stretch Islands and arrive at
the Allyn Public Dock in the town of Allyn.
Folks can either cook on their boats for dinner, or
join the group as we head into Allyn for dinner at Lennard
K's. After dinner we can sit on the dock and have a
good "gam" to discuss our cruise, Potters,
and sailboats in general.
Sunday Morning we will make the leisurely sail back
out of the Inlet and head over to Zittles to pull the
boats and pack for home.
Zittels Marina
The Case Inlet Cruise begins and ends at Zittels
Marina. For those that want to maximize the sailing
fun, a Friday launch and temporary moorage has been
arranged. Sailors wishing Friday moorage need to contact
Derek to make sure space is made available, and there
will be a charge in the neighborhood of $10 for the
night. For more information on ZIttels Marina, click
here.
Allyn Public Dock
.
The Allyn Public Dock consists of a
600 foot long dock with a T-Shaped float at the end
where we can moor. Moorage rates for boats under 26'
is $8/night. There is a waterfront park with picnic
tables, a pavilion, as well as a launch ramp. Close
by is the small town of Allyn, with groceries and restaurants.
There are no showers at the park, but there are public
"porta-pots" there.
